In the sacred practice of ulana ʻie, the piko is the spiritual and physical center of the weave, grounding the work in tradition and mana. Just as our own piko connects us to our ancestors and descendants, the piko of the weave symbolizes continuity, lineage, and interconnectedness.
For young learners, beginning with the piko is more than a technical step—it is an act of honoring those who came before, carrying their wisdom into the present, and preparing the way for those yet to come.
In this way, each haumāna learns that their hands do not weave alone, but as part of a living lineage that continues to grow with every strand.
